Things to avoid doing right after waking up - Health

After seven hours of sleep, your body is utterly dehydrated and this is the time when you need to go for some water and not crash on your caffeine.

Adequate hydration helps with the better functioning of your body. You’ll also be able to think better and be more awake.
If you think raising up with a coffee in hand and checking out your mails simultaneously is your way of healthy living, then you’re wrong.

There are certain habits that you need to avoid as soon as you wake up. By tweaking certain routine habits of yours, you can actually put an end to the wrong lifestyle habits that you have been following as soon as you wake up.

It’s high time to eliminate those bad habits and start doing things that are for your mind, body, and soul, as these can help you be more productive for the day.
Here are some things to avoid doing right after waking up.

Things that avoid doing right after waking up are:

1.Do Not Exercise Immediately After Waking Up: By rolling out of your bed and immediately starting your workout, you are doing more harm to your body than good. It was found that having something before hitting the gym helps in giving the brain the carbs that are necessary to power a solid workout.

2.You Skip Breakfast: You might have heard of this a 100 times, but breakfast is really the most important meal of a day. Skipping your morning meals can lead to several other health-related problems that can be avoided by sticking to regularly consuming it. This is one of the top health mistakes you make in the morning.

3.You Don’t Eat Protein: To your breakfast, remember to add some protein as well. This helps in maintaining the lean muscle mass and also distributes the protein throughout the day.

4.You Don’t Stretch After Waking Up: After you wake up, it is recommended to stretch right on your bed. Stretching out helps in limbering up the muscles and also in relaxing your muscles.

5.You Don’t Keep Yourself Hydrated: Once you’re out of bed, you need to immediately grab a bottle of water. Hydration is something that you’re deprived of for the past 7-8 hours. Hence, water is necessary to expel the accumulated toxins and also flush out the liver. Not drinking water is one of the top morning mistakes that you need to avoid.

6.You Drink Coffee Immediately: It was found that the body produces high amounts of stress hormone cortisol between 8 AM and 9 AM, as per a study. By drinking coffee around this time, it will force your body to produce more of cortisol in the morning. This hormone helps you stay active and energized throughout the day; however, leaves you completely stressed out by night.

7.Don’t Prepare Your Day In Dark: The body’s internal clock is said to be very sensitive to light. Hence, getting ready in the dark will send a signal to the body that it’s still night time. This will make you feel groggy and will not make you feel energized for the rest of the day. This is one of the morning mistakes you have got to avoid.

These are the things to avoid doing right after waking up.

That was a particularly busy week for me as my focus was on several of my charity events. It was the World celebration against HUMAN TRAFFICKING week and as a NAPTIP AMBASSADOR I was actively busy.

Firstly, I want to state that I do not write this in favour of anyone but to Make my son proud when he grows up...

A while ago I was contacted by a church in South Africa through the churchs administration representative by name Brenda.

I was contacted for a YOUTH seminar and I requested to bring along a couple of people with me which included my makeup artist @vugo24 ,  family and a friend who had always adored the gospel of this said church...

I was paid an appearance fee and out of the kindness of my heart, I shared a portion of my fee with Brenda, the above mentioned friend and my makeup artist.

I gave what I could each person at a time,Job was done I packed up and left back to being a mother and a humanitarian..

I was never invited to S.A by any friend, nor was I introduced to the church by a friend in NIGERIA or outside the country for my visitation... I really would have let this slide but I cannot be silent and have my good name tarnished and be linked with such horrible and shameful act

I can not speak for anyone else but myself...

A warning to whosoever is behind this falsehood, peddling all these malicious rumours, I would advice you to stop.

There are things I wouldn't take likely especially now as a mom.

I do not want to be roped in with the names of people who do this(Sleep with pastor) scandalous act...

I Go to church to serve my God and could care less about anyone else. Going to church is an avenue where I contact with my creator and not do otherwise...

I am a Christian, I am GROWING each day in GODS VINE yard but I wouldn't sit and watch my good name go up in flames over a malicious EVIL story...

INEC Presents Certificates To 23 New Political Parties

Presenting the certificates to Chairmen of the political parties on Thursday, the INEC Chairman said the commission would restrategise with security agencies for more robust response regarding the arrest and prosecution of vote buyers.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented certificates of registration to the 23 newly registered political parties in Abuja.

Presenting the certificates to Chairmen of the political parties on Thursday, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the commission, said the commission would restrategise with security agencies for more robust response regarding the arrest and prosecution of vote buyers.

He added that vote buying is a cancer to the electoral process, and there is need to work together to address it.

"The commission is deeply worried about our elections, particularly the way it has become increasingly monetised. Vote buying is a cancer to our electoral process and we must work together collectively to stamp it out," he stated.

He said there would be no room for voters to expose their marked  ballot papers between the voting cubicles and ballot boxes, adding that the commission will engage all well-meaning groups for more effective voter education.

Mahmood said the commission received 144 applications from the associations seeking registration as political parties.

He said: "I wish to congratulate the chairmen of the new political parties for meeting the criteria enshrined in the Constitution for registration as political parties. As from today, you are recognised as political parties under the law. From today, you also have equal status with any political party in Nigeria. This means that you can sponsor candidates for elections, including the 2019 general election."

He told the parties that they have an obligation to respect their Constitution, as well as abide by INEC guidelines and regulations.  He urged them to make a difference in politics with elective representation by conducting open, transparent, inclusive and peaceful primaries for the nomination of credible candidates for the elections.

"By doing so, you will give Nigerians better choice, thereby adding value to our democracy, in strengthening the quality of elective representation,” he stated.

Yakubu pointed out that activities for the 2019 elections would commence on Friday August 17, 2018 with the publication of a notice of call, adding that the commission had concluded arrangements in all INEC offices nationwide for the exercise.

The conduct of party primaries will begin from Saturday, August 18, 2018 and will end on October 7, 2018.

Responding on behalf of the chairmen of the new political parties, Omoyele Sowore, Presidential Aspirant under the African Action Congress (AAC), commended INEC for the registration, and stated that Nigerians needed their cooperation most at this time to defeat the old order in the politics of the country.

Minimum Wage: Governors Say They Can’t Perform Magic

Speaking on behalf of the Governors, Abdul'aziz Yari said: “I don’t think you people voted us only to pay salaries. You are looking for good roads, electricity, education and others. So, we can’t do magic. It’s only when we have the funds that we can do all those things."

Governors under the umbrella of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) have said they cannot “perform magic” as regards the implementation of new minimum wage

Responding to queries on the new minimum wage implementation, the Governors said they were not voted into power to pay salaries alone, stating that they also had the responsibility to provide necessary social amenities for their states.

Chairman of the Forum, Governor Abdul'aziz Yari of Zamfara State, stated this after a meeting with his colleagues on Wednesday night.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is proposing a minimum wage of N65,000 for workers.

Yari said it was regrettable that states governments had been limited to only paying salaries, while other sectors such as health, electricity, education, among others, were not given the same attention.

“I don’t think you people voted us only to pay salaries. You are looking for good roads, electricity, education and others. So, we can’t do magic. It’s only when we have the funds that we can do all those things,” he said.

Yari further disclosed that the decision of the governors regarding the minimum wage is dependent on the outcome of meeting between their six-man representative and the committee headed by the Minister of Labour.

“We have a committee of six, which represented us in discussions with the committee headed by the Labour Minister; the committee is yet to give us the final report. When they give us the final report, for which they have our mandate to present our position and the position most likely is to look at the record of up to 14 years,” he said.

We’re Monitoring Situation In Nigeria, Says UK Government

The United Kingdom has said it is “monitoring the situation and other political development in Nigeria,” following the blockage of the National Assembly by officers of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a statement issued by Joe Abuku, spokesperson for the UK Embassy, on Tuesday, the UK government said it would only support democratic process in Nigeria.

“We are aware of media reports of a situation at the National Assembly this morning. We are closely monitoring the situation and other political developments in Nigeria.

“The United Kingdom supports a process whereby the people of Nigeria can exercise their democratic right to vote and be voted for. We favour a free, fair, credible and peaceful process and the independence of institutions, which allow for that.”

Some DSS officials on Tuesday barricaded entrance into the National Assembly.

The operatives, according to Rafiu Ibrahim, a Senator representing Kwara South senatorial district, said the order to restrict lawmakers into their offices came “from the above.”

However, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo said the siege at the National Assembly was unauthorised shortly after he sacked the Director General of the DSS, Lawal Daura.

Daura is from the same Local Government Area as President Muhammadu Buhari, who was reported to have approved his (Daura) sack.

Meeting Of National Assembly Leadership Called Off 'Due To Tense Atmosphere'

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuf, has said the meeting of the National Assembly leadership earlier scheduled has been called off due to the tense atmosphere at National Assembly.

He disclosed this to the journalists on his way out of the complex.

Yusuf, said he was not aware of the impeachment plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers, especially as there must be two-third majority before the impeachment could sail through.

Speaking on the lawmakers who vowed to stay put at the entrance of the chamber, Lasun said they were entitled to their decision.

It was gathered that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, had directed his men not to be involved in the siege, noting that there was no threat to security at the National Assembly.

NASS Invasion: I Was Shocked To Hear Sacked DSS Boss Acted On His Own - Sagay

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) on Tuesday said he was shocked to hear that Lawal Daura, the sacked Director- General of the Department of State Service (DSS) acted on his own by barricading the National Assembly without authorisation from the Presidency.

Sagay, who said Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo had no choice than to fire the ex-DSS boss, added that there was no way the government could defend or justify Daura’s actions since it didn’t order him to carry out the invasion.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, he said: “When I started hearing about the invasion, I was wondering whether the sacked DSS boss has authority to do that because I couldn’t imagine him doing that without being authorised by the presidency.

“Later, when it emerged that he was doing it without authority, I was aghast and very shocked. So, it is a very major step. It is not that it cannot be done but there are circumstances where it may become necessary but if that is to be done, such order must come from the Presidency, not the man doing it on his own because we are talking of one arm of government.

“So, I was very shocked and honestly, given the gravity of what has happened, the Acting President had no choice than sacking him because it can bring down the name of the government.

Campaign Posters Of Reverend King Flood The Streets Ahead Of 2019 Election

Campaign posters of Reverend King who is currently incarcerated in prison after being sentenced to death by hanging – have began to flood the streets.

The convicted prisoner is said to be running for the presidency in the 2109 election under the platform of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA).

The General Overseer of Christian Praying Assembly (CPA), was was arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder.

He was sentenced to death by hanging in 2007 by Justice Joseph Oyewole at a Lagos High Court tried for murder of a church member, Ann Uzoh.

The judgement was upheld by the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division and finally affirmed by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court in 2016.

But according to a Brazil-based church leader, Rt Rev Ernest King, many Nigerians have been going to the prison in Sokoto to mount pressure on Rev King to come and contest and deliver the country.

According to a report by Newsmakers in February (during Rev. King’s birthday celebration), Ernest King said:

“This is the man that has solution for Nigeria. He prophesied about Nigeria’s case 18 years ago, that the country will come to a stage where there will be no solution. He said that he would be somewhere resting and they would bring the issue of Nigeria to him for him to solve for them.

“That was how they went to the prison about two months ago pleading that he should come and take over Nigeria. He had prophesied this 18 years ago.

“If Rev King should be allowed to handle Nigeria under 5 years, Nigeria will be one of the best countries in the world.”

He added:

“This is the man that has solution to every problem on Earth, but Nigerians don’t know what God gave them. The wicked and occult people want to kill him, but it’s impossible. As he told them in the Court on that day, there’s no rope on Earth that can enter Rev King’s head.”

I Will Not Defect If I Don’t Get PDP Ticket – Makarfi

I cannot contemplate defecting from PDP to another party; I will rather resign from politics because I don’t believe in defecting”, the former Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation stated.

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has said that he would not defect if he fails to clinch the party’s ticket.

Addressing journalists yesterday at the PDP secretariat in Minna, Makarfi said rather than defect, he would retire from politics.

“I cannot contemplate defecting from PDP to another party; I will rather resign from politics because I don’t believe in defecting”, the former Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation stated.

He, however, said there was nothing wrong in politicians defecting to another political party as was witnessed recently when some stakeholders re-joined the PDP from the ruling All Progressives
Congress (APC).

He also denied media reports quoting him as warning his party executive on defectors, saying his statement was misinterpreted.

“I made a statement in Lokoja, which was somehow twisted; I’m 100 per cent in support of those who defected; in fact, I predicted that after the APC convention, there will be a lot of defections. We are still expecting more people to join our party but the challenge is how to manage this success. If we manage it well, it will be to our advantage, but if we fail to do so there will be backlash and that is what I said,” he said.

He said there is enough room in the party to accommodate everybody, adding that what the leadership needs to do is to work out an enduring system that would take care of contending interests of those who are coming in and those already within the system.

“All of us should be prepared to make sacrifices for the collective interest of the party and Nigeria as a whole,” he advised.

On calls by the APC leadership on the Senate President, Bukola Saraki to resign his position, he said, “the Senate President and his deputy as well as the Speaker and his deputy were elected by all irrespective of the political parties they belong to based on the stipulation of the constitution. So the call on them by APC leadership to step aside is misplaced, unlawful and  unconstitutional”.

Jim Nwobodo: What Abacha Did After Atlanta '96; What I Did For Kanu Nwankwo

Jim Nwobodo, a former old Anambra governor, has revealed some events that happened during the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

A former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo, relives the victory of the Super Eagles in Atlanta Olympics of 1996 and how he saved Kanu Nwankwo from Coach Westerhof.
The Super Eagles won the gold medal in the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 when you were the Sports Minister.

Can you share with us the story of what happened then?
They (Super Eagles) beat Japan, beat Brazil and also beat other big teams. That was the time we had wonderful players. You can only know the best team when they go out of the country and play the best teams in the world. Mikel Obi is playing in China and there are other young boys like Alex Iwobi, Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho and many others.

There is one thing I like about Nigerian football. Nigerians are football lovers, there is no doubt about that and football has the ability to unite Nigerians.
I remember very well the 1996 event when we played in Atlanta Olympics. Nigeria was a pariah nation. The day we reached the climax was the day Nigeria met Brazil. We had a very strong team, those who were determined to do their best to make Nigeria proud.

Two things happened that day. We got into the field and, in the first half, they (Brazil) were leading Nigeria by 3-1. I sat by the side of then – FIFA President, Joao Havelange, a Brazilian lawyer, businessman and athlete who served as the 7th FIFA President from 1974 to 1998 and I told him we will beat Brazil and he started laughing because we were two goals down.

Half time break pep talk
During the half time break, I went to our boys in the dressing room and called them one by one, starting with Sunday Oliseh, then Daniel Omokachi, Kanu Nwankwo, Jay Jay Okocha, Victor Ikpeba, Celestine Babayaro and others. I urged them not to disgrace me and Nigerians and they assured me that they will beat Brazil. I then called the coach, Clemens Westerhof, who complained that Kanu was not playing well and that he would remove him.

I ordered him not to remove the young man. I threatened to sack him if he removed Kanu. He complied with my order and allowed Kanu to play in the second half. In the second half, Okocha scored the second goal, making it 2-3; another goal was scored by Kanu to make it 3-3 and second half ended. In the extra time, we had what is called the golden goal then and, five minutes after, Kanu scored the golden goal and the match ended. Everyone was surprised but God was at work and I heard Him (God) when I said Kanu should not be removed.

Kanu became the man of the match. We were excited and many whites and many Africans, who did not know about the Dream Team, started painting themselves in green white green. I was also told that families that were not in talking terms for ten years reconciled because of that match.

Sweet victory
Then – Head of State, General Sani Abacha, who was not in the habit of answering telephone calls, called almost all of us, including my wife. He did not stop there. He had to wait for us alongside some state governors for two days under the rain at the City Gate, Abuja when we returned to Nigeria and that was what that victory did to Nigeria. What a sweet victory!

The second thing that happened was that Chioma Ajunwa told me that she and other Nigerian athletes were yet to be paid their 300 dollars per day on the day she would compete. I saw reason with her but I told her it was a very small amount. I promised her that I will give her 10,000 dollars if she won a gold medal, she was shocked. I advised her to go for the long jump if she was good at that. Her first jump earned her gold medal for Nigeria and I gave her 10,000 dollars. This thing is about leadership and encouraging people around you.

So, sport, in itself, is something that, if properly developed, will bring the country together. Look at what sport is doing in the world today. If you are a sports administrator, you are known all over the world. FIFA President is bigger that any President in the world. My worry is that Nigeria has not given proper attention to sports.
What is your rating of journalists in Nigeria?
Nigeria has the freest press in the world; journalists write anything and get away with it and they hold people accountable and nobody can fight them. In Nigeria, I can say that we have a very free and strong press. I really don’t see anything wrong with what they are doing, except that they should always get their facts right.

What is your take on employers owing workers?
Any employer that owes his workers should not expect them to be loyal to him. Such could expose workers to temptation because they have to take care of themselves and their families. It is not good to owe your workers; whether they are journalists, footballers, civil servants, you don’t need to owe them. Workers deserve their wages. So it is not good at all. You should do everything possible not to owe your workers.

What about state governments owing workers?
I mean it’s unfair. It is ungodly and unchristian. If you don’t pay workers, what do you want them to do? In fact, when I was governor, I didn’t have anything as salary arrears. Throughout my stay in Government House, I never owed anybody for one month because one thing you do as a leader is to pay your workers before any other thing. That is the first charge and, from there, you motivate them to work harder.

So, any governor that owes workers for months is not fit to be a governor. Although, some governors have said that the problem about payment of salaries stems from the many problems confronting them, that argument does not hold water because you can still sit down and arrange your budget to make the recurrent less than the capital. You give capital budget priority over recurrent.

Apapa Congestion: Ambode Flags Off Expansion Of ABAT Truck Terminal In Orile

While others are resting at home, the Lagos state governor is busy at work inspecting works across the state.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday flagged off the expansion of the ABAT Truck Terminal in Orile Iganmu, assuring that work would be accelerated on the 1000-capacity terminal to take trucks parked indiscriminately on the roads and bridges.

Governor Ambode, who led an extensive inspection of ongoing projects across the State that last for about six hours, said the expansion of the Terminal was one of the resolutions reached at the recent meeting with stakeholders, especially in the Maritime sector on finding lasting solutions to take containerized trucks permanently off the roads, a development that is majorly responsible for the gridlock in the Apapa area.

The Governor said: "One of the resolutions is that we should have authorised truck Terminal Park and so my visit to this place today is to flag off the reconstruction of this terminal so that we can accommodate 1000 trucks.

"We would do this in collaboration with the Nigeria Ports Authority so that the call-up system can work efficiently. The expansion we are adding to this particular terminal in which we have decided to acquire the adjoining land, we would use that primarily for non-petroleum trucks so that we can sectionalized these trucks and allow the call-up system to work.

"This is just part of the efforts that the State Government is making to make sure this Apapa gridlock and the truck menace becomes a thing of the past permanently."

Governor Ambode also disclosed that the State Government has concluded plans to utilise an expanse of land in Ijanikin area with a capacity to accommodate at least 5,000 trucks.

"I have just been briefed that we have an additional land space in Ijanikin that can accommodate 5000 trucks. We will explore that possibility immediately; all that we are doing is just to make sure that there is a permanent solution to this whole idea of trucks destroying our bridges and roads," he said.

Pressure Mounts On Governor Tambuwal To Resign

A Group of ‘Concerned Citizens of Sokoto State’ has called on Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal to resign his position as governor following his defection to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, the group Coordinator, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, described Tambuwal’s exit from APC as betrayal of people’s mandate as given him in the 2015 election.

Abdullahi said Tambuwal’s emergence as Governor was not that he was popularly accepted by people of Sokoto, but because of the circumstances that PDP led Nigeria into then, as well as, contribution of Senator Aliyu Wamakko and President Muhammad Buhari.

“We are speaking on behalf of Sokoto people that we are totally against Tambuwal’s decision to join PDP and we want him to immediately return our mandate by resigning his position as governor,’’ Abdullahi said.

He called on the authorities to investigate the alleged bribery of 18 lawmakers to join PDP along with Tambuwal and sponsoring of people from the 23 Local Government Areas to attend Aug. 1, decamping event at Sokoto Government House.

The group Coordinator called on Tambuwal to either confirm or deny the allegations stressing that it was said that N5 million was spent on each of the Local Government to transport people to the event.

He added that the group would begin educating people to recall any lawmaker that followed Tambuwal’s actions, while suggesting that Nigeria’s Constitution should accommodate recall process of elected governor.

Abdullahi described Tambuwal’s comments on Federal Government not executing any project in Sokoto as misleading.

He listed establishment of 8 Division of Nigerian Army, N8.7 billion FGN/CBN Intervention programnme in agriculture among others as Buhari’s good work to Sokoto people.

Abdullahi also urged Governor Tambuwal to account for N18.3 billion Paris Club refunds and N10.09 billion Salary/Pension arrears settlement facilities given by the Federal Government.

He traced the history of Tambuwal’s emergence as Speaker House of Representatives, his governorship contest with his brother Sen. Umaru Dahiru-Tambuwal and the support he enjoyed from Sen. Aliyu Wamakko.

Others in attendance at the conference were Retired Sqd. Leader, Aminu Bala-Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Gidan-Bango, Alhaji Usman Hassan and Alhaji Mu’azu Maigwanjo.

EXCLUSIVE: God will never forgive me if I support Atiku for president — Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said on Friday that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should not count on him for support in his latest bid to actualise his life-long ambition of being elected the president of Nigeria.

The former president, one of the most influential of his living peers, hinged his blistering position on the unsavoury corruption perception of Mr Atiku while speaking with PREMIUM TIMES shortly after his arrival from Kigali on Friday afternoon.

“How can I be on the same side with Atiku?” Mr Obasanjo asked. “To do what?”

“If I support Atiku for anything, God will not forgive me. If I do not know, yes. But once I know, Atiku can never enjoy my support,” he added.

Mr Obasanjo rejected all notions that his remarks could be deemed too personal, coming as 2019 presidential campaign gathers steam with Mr Abubakar amongst the front-runners.

The pronouncement comes barely two weeks after Mr Abubakar declared his intention to run for president, touting his pro-business credentials and lambasting President Muhammadu Buhari for his handling of the country’s security situation.

Before then, the former vice president, who has unsuccessfully run for the top office multiple times, spent the past few months criss-crossing the country as part of a strategy aimed at broadening his appeal amongst politicians and the electorate.

It also comes a little over a month after the two met at an event in Abuja and shook each other’s hands before photographers, days after reports said Mr Obasanjo was under pressure to back Mr Abubakar.

“I do not have personal grudges with anyone,” Mr Obasanjo said. “If you do not do well for Nigeria, you do not do well for all of us.”

“It is not a question of working with or not working with an individual,” he said. “If you are working for the good of Nigeria, I am working with you. If you are not working for the good of Nigeria it does not matter who you are I am not working with you.”

In making his position clear on Mr Abubakar ahead of the presidential primaries in October, Mr Obasanjo has put to rest several months of speculation about whether he would soften his borderline disposition to his former vice president of eight years.

Settling old scores

The disclosure also exposed a fundamental fracture between Mr Obasanjo, who seems hell-bent at ensuring that the alleged transgressions of the past were not forgotten, and Mr Abubakar, who now appears in high spirit for reconciliation.

The former vice president is locked in a fierce contest for the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential ticket with several political bigwigs on the platform of the major opposition party.

The ever-broadening field already includes Rabiu Kwankwaso, Sule Lamido, Ahmed Makarfi and Taminu Turaki. While some of these politicians are already capable of challenging Mr Abubakar for the ticket, the recent addition of Senate President Bukola Saraki and Governor Aminu Tambuwal, both of whom are being rumoured as equally running for president, could further complicate Mr Abubakar’s chances.

Death toll in Afghanistan Mosque bombing rises to 34

The number of people wounded in the incident on Friday, however, had been revised downwards to 76, a police chief spokesman, Sardar Wali Tabasum, said.

Initially, officials spoke of 29 dead and 81 injured in the incident which took place in Gardiz, the capital city of Paktia province.

Two male suicide bombers dressed in women’s clothes and armed with rifles, entered a Shiite mosque in the Khoja Hassan in Gardiz on Friday afternoon, opened fire on worshippers and subsequently blew themselves up, officials said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, though Taliban militants denied involvement in the deadly incident.

Members of the Islamic State terrorist militia have been targeting minority Shia across Afghanistan regularly.

Some 200 Shiite families are living in Khoja Hassan, a spokesman for the provincial governor, Abdullah Hasrat, said. Paktia province is mainly populated by ethnic Pashtuns, who mostly follow Sunni Islam.

According to a United Nations’s Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA) report, 115 civilians have been killed and 251 injured in attacks during the past six months on the Shia Muslim population.

Nearly all have been claimed by IS members.

1,500 migrants die crossing Mediterranean in seven months – UNHCR

No fewer than 1,500 refugees and migrants have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean in the first seven months of 2018, the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said.

The refugee agency said the bleak milestone was confirmed after more than 850 lives were lost in June and July alone, marking the Mediterranean crossing as the deadliest sea route in the world.

UNHCR said it was particularly concerned, as the rate of deaths was increasing, in spite of the fact that total number of people arriving on European shores is significantly reduced compared to previous years.

Around 60,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean so far this year, about half as many as in 2017 and a return to pre-2014 levels.

However, one in every 31 people attempting the crossing in June and July died or are missing, compared to one in 49 in 2017, the UN agency said.

Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR Special Envoy for the Mediterranean, said: “UNHCR urges States and authorities along transit routes to take all necessary action to dismantle smuggler networks.

“In order to save lives at sea, we must use appropriate and necessary measures to hold to account, those who seek to gain profit from the exploitation of vulnerable human beings’’.

Exploitative traffickers and smugglers were reportedly organising increasingly dangerous crossings, in ever-more unseaworthy and flimsy vessels.

These boats, which smugglers severely overloaded with passengers, are then left to sail out at sea in the hope that a rescue will come in time, UNHCR regretted.

2019: Dankwambo declares presidential bid

Gombe state governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, has declared his intention to contest the 2019 presidential election.

Mr Dankwambo said he will seek the position on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He made the declaration at the Government house, Gombe, on Saturday, during a meeting with party officials led by the deputy national chairman, Babayo Gamawa, elders and delegates from the six states of the North-east zone.

While addressing the party officials, Mr Dankwambo said he accepted the call of the people across the country to run next year for the top post.

He said he decided to contest to “consolidate on the gains of democracy and save the country from hunger and starvation”.

Mr Dankwambo said the north east zone was long due for the presidency, saying its last shot was the regime of late Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

“We have been consulting and seeking the support of other zones to produce the next president of the country in 2019,” he said.

According to him, the zone needs to present a candidate with a formidable track record of achievement in both security and economy which he said the administration of Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigeria woefully.

I’ll rather quit politics than leave PDP — Makarfi

Former Kaduna state governor, Ahmed Makarfi, has ruled out the possibility of leaving the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for any other political party if he does not win the party’s ticket for the country’s top job in 2019.

He said he would rather quit politics instead of joining any other political group.

Mr Makarfi said this on Saturday while addressing journalists at the PDP secretariat in Minna, the Niger State capital.

NAN reports that Mr Makarfi is in Minna to drum up support for his presidential bid in 2019.

“If I leave PDP, I would leave politics. If I was to leave PDP, I could have defected a long time ago. So that possibility is not there,” he said.

He said he predicted the recent mass defections to PDP, adding that the biggest challenge is managing it.

“I welcome all the defectors and as a matter of fact I predicted it. I said it that after the APC convention you would see a lot of defections and that’s what has happened.

“But the challenge is how to manage it. If we manage it well, the party would be better for it but if we don’t we may run into problems,” he said.

His position in Minna on the defectors, is softer than what he said in Lokoja on Friday, when he warned his party against giving them special treatment.

He said if not for the steadfastness of committed members, PDP could have become history.

“Some people when you pinch them like this (touching his arm), they will run to another party. When the going was tough, I stayed on… but you accept them into your house and give them your guest room. Next, they take the master bedroom; next, they drive you out of your house. We must not allow this, nor give undue advantage to them, so that we do not alienate our people.

“Modu Sheriff was brought from another party; they said he had three jets; he had billions, but what did he do? He was taking the party down, but I, the ‘bush boy,’ with the support of others, I was able to make members close ranks, and today, we can all see.”

Mr Makarfi said Bukola Saraki should be left alone as Senate president because he has not breached any provision of the constitution on account of his defection from APC to PDP.

“The constitution says the senators should elect from among themselves and not from the majority party,” said Mr Makarfi, who also was a senator from 2007 to 2011.

“Party affiliations are only attached to other positions like minority whip, majority leader and so on.

“Therefore, Saraki should be left alone because he was elected based on constitutional provisions and his continued stay is lawful,” he added.

He noted that addressing issues of insecurity, unemployment, power, infrastructure and national unity would be his top priorities if given the chance to lead the country.

“A basket of issues including security, infrastructure and power would be top of my priorities.

“National cohesion is also key because we are divided and getting more divided by the day.

“And this national cohesion is where the issue of restructuring comes in as it will address unemployment,” he added.

Mr Makarfi is the immediate past national chairman of the PDP. (NAN)

Soldiers kill 20 bandits, free captives in Zamfara

The Nigerian military conducting Operation Sharan Daji to flush out bandits in Zamfara, on Saturday said it had neutralised 20 bandits and freed their captives in Zamfara.

The Force Information Officer of the operation, Muhammad Dole, disclosed this in a statement in Kaduna.

“In continuation of the ongoing Operation SHARAN DAJI, the troops conducted several raids and ambush operations in major identified camps and routes in Maradun, Tsafe and Zurmi Local Goverment Areas of Zamfara State.”

He said during the encounter at DABAN- DOKA village near Dansadau, troops laid ambush along bandits’ identified routes where 20 bandits were neutralised.

“Some bandits escaped with gunshot wounds and several motorcycles were burnt. In one of the troops encounter with the bandits, two notorious bandits, Bello Danboko and Sani Maza, were eliminated in Yanwari ward near Yankuzo and Mai Tukunya village near Dansadau all in Zamfara.”

According to him, during a recent clearance operation along Mashema, Kwadi, Kalage, Gambiru and Kagara axis, heavy fight ensued between troops and bandits.

However, he said due to overwhelming military fire power, a reasonable number of bandits were neutralised and their camps were set ablaze.

“This successful feat has created relative peace and spurred massive returns of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their villages in Zurmi Local Govt Area.”

He said the troops had begun aggressive day and night fighting patrols around Kyaranke and Giwabawa villages in Kanoma District of Maru area, following a tip-off on imposition of one million naira levy each on the two villages.

He said the Force Commander, Mohammed Mohammed, “wishes to assure the law abiding citizens that the troops are poised to ensure quick restoration of peace and safety in all the vulnerable areas in Kaduna and Zamfara States”.

How doctors gave me my face (and my life) back: British teenager who was left horribly disfigured by a brutal acid attack in Zanzibar tells of her triumph over evil 70 operations later

18-year-old, from North London, had been volunteering at a school in Zanzibar

Five years on, the brave girl's recovery has been nothing short of miraculous

The right side of her face and body were completely burnt by the acid attack

Her assailants, who used acid from a car battery, have never been identified

What started as the trip of a lifetime became the stuff of nightmares for Katie Gee in a single vicious moment.

The 18-year-old, from North London, had been volunteering at a school in Zanzibar when she and her friend Kirstie Trup were doused in acid in an unprovoked and now infamous attack by two men on a moped. The results were horrific.

Kirstie suffered burns to her arm, but it was Katie who bore the brunt. The right side of her face and body were completely burnt while her right ear was left shrivelled, black and useless.

Yet five years on, almost to the day, her recovery has been nothing short of miraculous, as our photographs attest.

And thanks to 70 operations – many of them gruelling 12-hour-long skin grafts – the dedicated care of medical staff and endless perseverance from Katie herself, her skin is almost completely smooth, the scars barely visible at all.

During the first three years after the attack, she had to wear a plastic face mask and full body compression suit for 23 hours a day and, last month, became the proud owner of a new right ear, masterfully sculpted from tissue from one of her ribs.

These details and more all form part of the extraordinary diary she shares today with The Mail on Sunday, charting her recovery from the day she arrived at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Today, the worst of her treatment is over, and the sociology student, who graduated from Nottingham University last year, wants to pay tribute to the extraordinary work of the Health Service – and to highlight the sheer destruction caused by a type of attack which is growing increasingly common, particularly in London.

Her assailants, who used acid from a car battery, have never been identified. 'In the first few years I barely went out,' Katie says. 'I had no confidence. People would stare and it makes you feel ugly and different, like a spectacle. I've come such a long way in five years.'

Meghan Markle 'is planning to fly to the US and reunite with her estranged father Thomas in secret within weeks' for the pair's first meeting since he missed her wedding

Thomas Markle is said to be keeping two dates free at the end of the month

The meeting would be the first time Meghan has seen her father in months

The 74-year-old pulled out of her wedding in May citing health concerns

Meghan Markle and her father are planning to reunite in secret in the US later this month, friends of the Duchess have reported.

A source claims Meghan will take a solo trip home to America later this month to see her estranged father Thomas Markle, according to the Mirror

The 74-year-old former lighting director is said to be 'delighted' about the potential visit from Meghan, and is 'keeping two dates free at the end of the month'.

The meeting would be the first time the former actress has seen her reclusive father in several months after he pulled out of her wedding to Prince Harry in May, citing health concerns.

Thomas reportedly suffered a heart attack after selling staged paparazzi photos to the media ahead of the nuptials.

Meghan's friends have said the reunion could mark the end of a devastating rift in the Markle family.

Earlier this week an insider told the Mirrorthat Meghan is 'deeply hurt' by what has happened with her relationship with her father, calling it an 'increasingly desperate situation'.

Thomas has repeatedly complained about being 'cut off' by his daughter in media interviews - vowing that he won't stop speaking to the press until she agrees to get back on speaking terms.

The newly-minted royal celebrated her 37th birthday on Saturday August 4 - her first since tying the knot to Prince Harry in May.

Meghan's notoriously outspoken half-sister Samantha Markle sent her regards on Twitter just a few minutes before midnight in the UK, writing: 'Happy Birthday Meg!

'It would be so lovely and appropriate of you to send DAD a BELATED birthday card for his July 18th [cake emoji] @KensingtonRoyal Cheers!'

APC Will Understand Our Strength When It Tries To Impeach Saraki – Tambuwal

Aminu tambuwal governor of Sokoto state, says the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will resist any illegal move to impeach Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Following Saraki’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP, some lawmakers and APC chieftains have asked him to step down.

On Wednesday, Adams Oshiomhole, APC national chairman, said it is “a matter of honour” for Saraki to “leave the crown (senate presidency) in the house that the crown belongs to.”

The PDP caucus in the house of representatives subsequently raised an alarm that some senators were plotting to impeach Saraki through the backdoor.

But speaking at the PDP national executive council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Tambuwal, who just recently left the APC as well, said any attempt to impeach Saraki unconstitutionally will harm Nigeria’s democracy.

“When I hear that some people are trying to break into the chambers of the senate to steal the mace and install a pseudo president of the senate, I wonder whether they actually know the rules of our democratic engagement. It’s not a Gestapo, we are in democracy,” he said.

“If the senators have confidence in Bukola Saraki, they should continue to sustain him as president of the senate. And so be it with Mr. Speaker, Dogara.

“So, nobody should be afraid. There is a process. And we must respect due process and rule of law. And Nigeria is not a banana republic. We will not take it from anybody. Let them hear it very clear. If you try it, we will match out our forces in this country and jam you.

“Because we are talking about democracy. We cannot afford to allow anybody, no matter how highly placed, to toy with the future of about 200 million people in this country.”

He also said if Saraki decided change his political party, there is nothing anybody can do about it.

“The constitution of this country is very clear that members of the senate and the house of representatives can choose from among themselves their own president of the senate or speaker without leaning to any political party,” Tambuwal said.

Saraki Planning To Impeach Buhari – Mohammed Lawal

Former Deputy Director of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Council, Engineer Mohammed Lawal has alleged that Senate President, Bukola Saraki was planning to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

He warned those who think that Buhari was going to succumb to any form of intimidation to perish such thought.

According to him, Saraki should have been thrown into jail for allegedly arming robbers, who were involved in the April bank robbery in Offa, Kwara State.

Speaking with Sun, Lawal said, “Their grievance is that they wanted to be accommodated, and their grievance is not against the President. For example, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki wanted to be given the entire APC structure in Kwara State, and be given the party ticket and to return as the Senate President.

“Saraki is still the Senate President, while Abdulfatah Ahmed is still the governor of Kwara State, there has never been election in the state. They said it that during elections, Saraki shares money to ensure that he and his people win. This is what has been going on in Kwara. As far as he is concerned, he will use money to put his people.

“Look at the revelation coming out from the Offa bank robbery incident, where over 30 people were killed. The suspects confessed to the whole world that during elections, Saraki armed and gave them money to ensure his victory and that of his people.

“Obasanjo succeeded in undoing Jonathan, but he can never succeed against Buhari, and he knows. We are students of power, and if not because we don’t want Nigerians to say that Buhari is not a democrat, it shouldn’t have been like this. We would have moved against these people. We know that Saraki was planning to impeach the president. The chairman of the party arranged for them to see the president, after they have seen him, he turned back to frustrate the president and to undermine the party, and had already made up his mind on what he was going to do. We will see how far they can go, we have our own plan, and we are in power.”

Resign now or face consequences, Adamu tells Saraki

A senator, Abdullahi Adamu (APC-Nasarawa), has faulted the defection of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mr Adamu, who made this known in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Friday, said “Saraki had stepped on banana peel and should be prepared to bear the consequences of his action.”

Messrs Adamu and Saraki, former political allies, have been antagonists since the former accused the senate president of working against the interest of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Saraki earlier in the week attacked Mr Adamu, saying he was a deceptive, manipulative and desperate liar.

“He feels the best way to play his self-survival game and ingratiate himself to the government in order to save his skin is for him to be seen to be fighting Saraki, even if that would require him to tell brazen lies and peddle mischief in his old age,” Me Saraki said of the Nasarawa senator who had repeatedly criticised him.

In his Friday statement on the senate president, Mr Adamu said, “If Saraki knows political intricacies and the political terrain or the path where the banana peel in political landscape is, he will be more cautious.

“The way he is going now, he has obviously stepped on banana peel and only God knows how far he will slip.

“I will not pretend. I think he made a mistake and he took a wrong decision. He will have stories to tell along the line.

“It is not the best he could have done. He had a duty to his father to keep the flag of the family flying but the way he is going, I do not think he is doing that.”

Don’t politicize Anambra airport project – Professional bodies tell Obiano

THE Anambra State branch of the Association of Professional Bodies in Nigeria (APBN), said yesterday that it was unhappy with the slow pace of work at the site of the International Cargo Airport project in Umuleri in Anambra East local government area being executed by the state government.

Willie Obiano Chairman of the body, Dr. Akaolisa Ezeagu, who spoke in Awka, regretted that the speed at which the project started had dropped significantly, urging the government not to play politics with the project.

According to him, Anambra professionals would not want to believe that the project was used to score political points, in view of its enormous economic significances to the state, adding that the concept of the cargo airport and the way the state government went about it initially indicated professionalism. He said: “If the state would have the airport, being one of the states with the highest commercial activities, it will definitely boost trade in the state.

“The concept of the project is where aircrafts are going to be re-fuelled, among other facilities and it would be the first of its kind in the sub-saharan Africa.

There will be enough dividends derivable from the project and so it is not something government should play politics with at all.

“As professionals,  we know the cost implications of the project. It is a capital intensive project which will be impossible for the state to carry out single-handedly.

“That is why it should review the Public Private Partnership policy because if it is a monolithic PPP policy, the financial capability of the company may dwindle at any point in time.

The project needs to be segmented with aggregated

PPP in order to actualize the dream at a record time. Describing the airport as a key developmental project, which would sustain the state’s economy for a long time, the chairman urged the government to see to its actualization before the expiration of the Obiano administration.

Blood test requiring just one drop to detect arthritis two years before any symptoms could become available in Britain by 2020

Currently 8.5million Brits suffer from osteoarthritis, with many late diagnoses

Late stage diagnoses can mean hip or knee replacement is the only option

Test detects protein glucosepane which is released when joints are damaged

A simple blood test for the most common form of arthritis costing under £200 could detect the condition two years before any symptoms.

The osteoarthritis test, which requires just a single drop of blood, is 98 per cent accurate and picks up a protein fragment released into the bloodstream by joint damage. It could be available for use within two years.

Currently 8.5million people in Britain suffer from osteoarthritis. Often it is diagnosed at such a late stage that a hip or knee replacement is the only option.

But the test could help people catch the condition early, so they could make changes such as losing weight or doing exercise to try to avoid debilitating symptoms later on. Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of the cartilage which helps our joints cope with bending and lifting.

Women are dying for bigger butts: 33 patients have died on US surgical tables in just 5 years, top plastic surgeons reveal - as they call to change how Brazilian butt lifts are performed

One in every 3,000 people who have Brazilian butt lifts die after the surgery

That is twice as many as any other cosmetic procedure In the last eight years, at least 10 women died from butt lifts in Florida

Experts across the world are warning patients that an fat injection made too deep could prove deadly

Women from across the globe are dying from complications of Brazilian butt lift operations, prompting an international task force of plastic surgeons to warn against the procedure.
Driven to fame (or infamy) by the likes ofKim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, plastic surgeons performed 18,487 such 'butt lifts' in 2015.

But the procedures comes with serious risks.

For 30-year-old Lattia Baumeister, a butt lift was deadly. She died on the operating table in Florida, leaving her six children in Illinois motherless.

She was one of least 33 people have died in the last five years in the US because fat transferred to their butts caused deadly embolisms, and a special task force is now warning surgeons that the way they learned to do the operation may be deadly.

A normal butt lift reduces the size of the butt. It is commonly used for formerly overweight people who lost weight.

However, a BBL increases the size of the butt, by adding grafted or injected fat.

It was created by Ivo Pitanguy, a pioneering Brazilian plastic surgeon, who died in August 2016 aged 90 after carrying the Olympic flame in Rio.

HOW IT WORKS:

Liposuction to remove fat from abdomen/hips/thighsFat is 'processed'Fat is injected into buttocks

BBL STYLES:

Upside-down heart, or 'A-shape': Much smaller waist and larger buttocks towards the bottom

Round: emphasis on increasing the size of the butt, not pulling in the waist or thighs

HOW TO PREPARE:

Don't smoke (increases infection risk and blood clot risk)Don't gain weight (when you lose it again, your butt will change)

RISK OF DEATH:

Higher than most operations - 20 in 100,000 compared with 1 in 100,000.

There are two major risk factors that can make a BBL fatal:

Blood clots travel to lungsAccidental injection of fat to blood vessel

RECOVERY:

Don't work for 10 days

Don't sit for 6 weeks

Sleep on stomach

Final shape will take months or a year to form
